High School of Music and Art, his growing exposure as a teenager to the music and culture of the New York Latino community fascinated him. A trip to Cuba in the late fifties resulted in a two year adventure studying Afro-Cuban music in all its manifestations: from West African based liturgical repertoire to popular dance styles. On his return to New York he made a name for himself as a top bandleader and was signed by the new Fania Record Company, the most important label in the history of Latin music.

Known as the home for salseros, Coco Bongos is one of the hottest spots for salsa. The club has been recently remodeled to give more of an upscale flare. The salsa is a combination of modern and classic; about 70% with merengue and bachata thrown in. They have a back room that plays straight reagatton. Cover is usually $10. Free parking.

JJ Wispers is a very elegant club/lounge. The ambiance is beautiful. The music is good as well as the dance floor. More Salsa is played in the earlier evening then they move into reaggaton after midnight with some Merengue, Bachata and Salsa thrown in. JJ Wispers is a fun night out. Usually a $10 cover w/ free parking.

Club Mambo
Located on Oakridge Rd.
Club Mambo offers a nice night out for dancers. Spacious club with good music and nice dance floor. About 50% salsa (more salsa in the early evening) 50% merengue and bachata. Many dancers attend. Upstairs room for reagaton. Usually a $10 cover w/ free parking.

Latin Quarter is beautiful Latin restaurant located in City Walk which is Universal Studios. The food is good with a great atmosphere. The salsa is limited to a few early in the evening. They play more merengue, bachata and reagatton w some salsa later in the night. If youÅQre looking just to hang out and grab dinner and a few drinks with some friends and maybe dance a few then Latin Quarter would be the spot. The parking if free, but get ready for a long walk to the club from the parking garage. Remember your at Universal Studios. If having dinner no cover before 10pm. Cover is usually $10 cover.
